Welcome to Kenyan Organic Intellectuals Network

The Organic Intellectuals Network is a broad-based collective of writer-activists, organizers and researchers from the social movements and progressive organisations in Kenya.

About Us

The Organic Intellectuals Network is a collective of writer-activists, organizers, and researchers rooted in Kenya’s social movements. Inspired by the ideas of Antonio Gramsci, we cultivate critical thought, lived experience, and grassroots struggle as legitimate forms of knowledge and resistance.

Grounded in grassroots realities, we create a platform for political education, radical reflection, and collective liberation.

The Network of Organic Intellectuals draws inspiration from Antonio Gramsci’s influential reflections on the nature and role of intellectuals in society. Gramsci argued that intellectual activity does not occur in a vacuum; it emerges from specific socioeconomic conditions. Every class or social group produces its own cadre of organizers, creators, interpreters, and critical thinkers—what Gramsci termed organic intellectuals—who articulate the experiences and aspirations of their communities.

In this spirit, the Organic Intellectuals Network seeks to cultivate writers and thinkers from within social movements in Kenya and across Africa who are deeply engaged in the struggles for social justice—individuals embedded in grassroots realities—participating in everyday organizing, political education, and cultural production.

The network provides a platform for continuous reflection, dialogue, and coordination. It connects those who are thinking and acting within grassroots communities with those in other progressive platforms and organizations. In doing so, it aims to sharpen political clarity, amplify marginalized voices, and provide strategic direction in the ongoing struggles against exploitation, oppression, and imperialism.
